What is SEO?

Ever “Googled” your own company? The chances are that your business’s website would come up on page one of search for your company name. That means of course that anyone looking for your services would find them easily (over your competitors) if they search your company name. The thing is, most people won’t search for your company name unless they already know of you… what about new customers? Well, the majority of people looking for your products or services will search the actual product or service name itself. Where does your website appear for that? If it’s not within the first three pages of the results then it’s highly unlikely many customers will find you, and chances are they’ll end up with a competitor instead.

SEO and Your Business

The key to SEO is keywords, if your website is optimized well then it will rank for the terms that are both most highly searched, and most likely to convert into sales. In order to SEO a website we first research which relevant terms are most searched by consumers looking for your products or services, it can be surprising how different the search volumes are between several words that essentially mean the same thing.

Once we have our keywords lists, we implement them into the pages of your website with the right proximity and prominence to get the desired effect, not simply plastering keywords everywhere of course, as search engines don’t like that one bit, and neither will your site visitors.

We modify things behind the scenes with META tags and so forth, we then start link building because having good incoming links from sites that are relevant to your own, with the right anchor text can do wonders for your search engine rankings!

After a whole bunch of other technical stuff that you probably don’t want to hear about we then follow the results, monitoring your website traffic and analyzing what’s working and what isn’t. This enables us to evolve your website for optimum results.

Not only does having your website high up in search engine results vastly improve your conversions but it also helps with branding, as these two studies by Enquiro and SEMPO show:

Occupying the top of organic and paid search listings can not only pay off in terms of
performance marketing – it can also have a big impact on consumers’ perception of
brands, according to a Google sponsored study from Enquiro Research.

According to a recent comScore/ SEMPO study, search marketing is crucial in building brand awareness and driving offline sales for Consumer Packaged Goods Companies.

With many studies showing that people often search locally, within their geographical area for products and services, it really helps small businesses to rank well for their terms in their neigbouring towns and cities, as this study by ComScore via Marketing Vox shows:

47% of local searchers in the second quarter of 2006 said they visited a local merchant as a result of their search behaviour.
41% made other offline contact and 37% made contact online as a result of conducting a local search.

It’s also worth a mention that searchers apparently spend more, and that the description for each page on your website should be finely tuned to pull in your audience, as this study by Harvest Digital shows:

The study also found that customers arriving at the site via search engines spent an average of 20% more than non-searchers.
43% of users click on links because they are on the first page compared to a third of users who click because the description describes what they are looking for.

[Source: Harvest Digital, April, 2006]

Four out of 10 searchers tend to click on links on the first page of search results but then revise their search query or try another search engine if they don't find what they want.
62% of searchers click on a link within the first page of results.
90% click on a link within the first three pages.
36% of search engine users believe that the companies whose websites are returned at the top of the search results are the top brands in their field.

 [iProspect / JupiterResearch, April 2006]

The long and short of it, if you’re ranked nice and high for your search terms, with good page descriptions, you’re far more likely to see the cash rolling in.
